What does humanism mean to your group?
Growing up in N'Djamena, I (Rahma Youssouf Moussa) was taught to accept traditional roles: marrying young, having children, and managing the home. These practices were deeply ingrained in our culture, and many of us believed there was no other way. However, as we gained access to education, things began to change. With our newfound knowledge, many women started questioning the restrictions placed on us, inspired by humanism the idea that every individual deserves dignity, equality, and the freedom to make their own decisions. Through education and exposure to global movements on gender equality, we realized we didn’t have to accept outdated practices and could pursue education, careers, and their own paths without fear of judgment or punishment.
As social media and global movements for women's rights grew, we in N'Djamena found solidarity and strength in the stories of others challenging similar patriarchal structures. These stories inspired and empowered us, showing us that we were not alone in our desires for change. The more we shared our experiences and supported one another, the more we began to build a collective movement rooted in humanism. This journey of empowerment has been gradual, but as we embraced humanism, education, and global awareness, we rejected limiting traditions and started building a new vision of womanhood. It’s a vision where we are free to make our own choices, live with dignity, and pursue equality without being confined by the expectations of the past.
Project Description
Chad has one of the highest fertility rates in the world, with limited access to contraceptives and family planning services. Many women in N’Djamena lack the resources and knowledge to make informed decisions about their reproductive health, leading to unintended pregnancies, unsafe abortions, and poor maternal health outcomes. Additionally, cultural and religious barriers often prevent women from accessing sexual health education and services. This project aims to empower 55 humanist women in N’Djamena by providing them with access to a variety of contraceptives, family planning methods, and comprehensive sexual health education. The program will be coordinated and held at our pharmacy and will be highly supervised by the community health workers licensed by the governments to work in our local hospital. By doing so, we will enable these women to take control of their reproductive health, reduce unintended pregnancies, and improve their overall well-being.
Project Objectives
Provide Access to Contraceptives: Distribute a variety of contraceptives (condoms, oral pills, injectables, and emergency contraception) to 55 women.
Promote Family Planning: Educate women on different family planning methods and help them choose the most suitable option for their needs.
Deliver Sexual Health Education: Conduct workshops to educate women on sexual health, reproductive rights, and the prevention of sexually transmitted infections (STIs).
Empower Women: Enable women to make informed decisions about their bodies and futures, fostering gender equality and autonomy.
This project will lay the foundation for long-term change by equipping women with the knowledge and resources they need to take control of their reproductive health. Participants will be encouraged to share their knowledge with other women in their communities, creating a ripple effect of empowerment and awareness. With $300, this project will provide 55 humanist women in N’Djamena with the tools and knowledge they need to make informed decisions about their reproductive health. By investing in their well-being, we are not only improving their lives but also contributing to the broader goals of gender equality and sustainable development in Chad.
