Blossom Projects Safe House (India)

Kerala, India

Blossom Projects is an educational residence for youth who have dropped out of school in Kerala, where they can continue their academic study and develop confidence. The curriculum emphasizes communicative English, public speaking, computer skills, the arts and academic mastery.

The Blossom Projects Safe House is for nine girls who have graduated but wish to attend vocational workshops in preparation for their careers in nursing or social work.

In Kerala, the dropout rate for girls is very high in the Dalit community, those traditionally-considered “untouchable.” Girls’ individual excellence is not encouraged by their families, their communities or the society at large. Furthermore, girls are often pressured to work before they finish their education. However, if these girls live in an environment where they are supported and encouraged, where they can feel secure, loved and cared for, they will build their self-esteem. This provides the motivation and inspiration for Blossom Academy.

Blossom Projects have seen incredible success in our year after year. After graduating from any of their tracks (intensive literacy, high-school extended, summer and winter camps) the students reenroll in the state school system, join vocational training, or secure a job. Over 1200+ students have participated in Blossom programs since 2012.

The school director’s philosophy is Navayana Buddhist. It is secular humanist, created by B. R. Ambedkar for India’s Dalit community. It emphasizes social engagement. More information here: https://secularbuddhistnetwork.org/the-emergence-of-navayana-buddhism/
