Why we are Humanist
I (Fatimata Hassana) as a humanist, believe deeply in the intrinsic value and dignity of every individual, regardless of their circumstances. My efforts to save orphans on the streets of Maradi, Niger, stem from my empathy and commitment to improving the lives of vulnerable children who lack basic care, education, and emotional support.
Niger, being one of the poorest countries in the world, has many children facing extreme poverty, homelessness, and a lack of access to essential services, making Fatimata's mission both urgent and vital.
By founding a humanist orphanage, I aim to provide these children with a nurturing environment where they can access shelter, food, education, and healthcare. my focus is not only on meeting their immediate needs but also on fostering their personal growth, self-reliance, and confidence. As a humanist, I like to emphasize values such as compassion, tolerance, and the importance of community, ensuring that these orphans grow up with the tools they need to lead fulfilling lives.
My initiative is a practical expression of humanist ideals: working to create a better world through direct action, promoting equality, and addressing societal issues like child homelessness and poverty. By giving these children a new chance at life, I am contributing to the development of my community and inspiring others to engage in similar acts of kindness and social responsibility.
Purpose of our group
The purpose of our humanist orphanage in Maradi, Niger, extends beyond merely providing immediate relief to the orphans; it serves as a transformative institution for both the children it shelters and the broader community. Its mission is multi-faceted and deeply rooted in the principles of humanism, emphasizing the empowerment of individuals and the development of society through compassion and education. Here’s a detailed elaboration on its purpose:
1. Providing Basic Needs and Security
The orphanage will address the immediate needs of vulnerable children, offering shelter, food, and healthcare. Many street children in Maradi face hunger, malnutrition, and exposure to dangerous living conditions. The orphanage provides a safe haven, protecting them from abuse, exploitation, and the psychological trauma of street life.
2. Fostering Education and Skill Development
One of the orphanage’s core objectives is to equip the children with education and practical skills. In Niger, access to quality education remains limited, especially for orphans and marginalized groups. Our orphanage will ensure these children can attend school, develop literacy and numeracy skills, and gain vocational training, preparing them for productive and self-sufficient lives.
3. Promoting Emotional and Social Well-being
The orphanage will create an environment of care and emotional stability, where children feel valued and supported. Through counseling, mentorship, and group activities, the institution helps the children heal from past traumas and build confidence. These efforts are crucial for their mental health and overall development.
4. Breaking Cycles of Poverty and Marginalization
By giving orphans access to education and opportunities, the orphanage helps break the cycle of poverty that often traps marginalized families. These children, once neglected, can grow into educated and empowered adults who contribute positively to society, uplifting themselves and others around them.
5. Inspiring Community Development and Humanist Values
The orphanage will act as a beacon of hope and compassion in the community, inspiring others to support humanitarian causes. It encourages the community to value every individual’s potential and to engage in collective efforts to address social issues.
6. Strengthening Social Cohesion
In Maradi, a region that may experience divisions due to poverty, inequality, or cultural differences, the orphanage will serve as a unifying force. By emphasizing inclusivity and shared responsibility, it fosters solidarity and a sense of collective purpose among the local population.
7. Contributing to National Development
In the long term, the orphanage will support Niger's broader developmental goals by reducing the number of street children, improving literacy rates, and creating a generation of individuals equipped to tackle the challenges facing their country.
Our orphanage will therefore not just be a refuge for vulnerable children but a cornerstone for building a more equitable, compassionate, and progressive society in Maradi. Its impact will ripple through the community, inspiring hope and catalyzing positive change.
Projects we are planning
Here are the list of the projects that we will plan on doing:
1. Agricultural Initiatives
●Crop Farming: Cultivate staple crops like millet, maize, or vegetables to feed the orphanage and sell excess produce in local markets.
●Livestock Farming: Rear animals such as goats, chickens, or cows to provide milk, eggs, and meat, with surplus sold for income.
2. Vocational Training Programs
●Skill Development Centers: Train orphans and community members in tailoring, carpentry, or mechanics. Products and services can be sold to generate income.
3. Craft and Artisan Projects
●Handmade Goods Production: Make items like pottery, jewelry, or woven baskets, and sell them locally or online.
4. Renewable Energy Initiatives
●Solar Power Installation: Use solar panels to reduce electricity costs, and potentially sell excess power to nearby communities if infrastructure permits.
5. Small-Scale Manufacturing
●Soap or Candle Making: Produce soaps, candles, or other basic household goods to meet local demand.
6. Educational Services
●Community Learning Center: Offer affordable education or tutoring services to local children, generating revenue while enhancing the community’s literacy.
7. Hospitality or Event Services
●Event Space Rental: Rent out parts of the orphanage premises for community events, workshops, or gatherings when not in use.
8. Health and Wellness Projects
●Herbal Medicine Production: Grow and process medicinal plants into herbal remedies for local sale.
●Health Clinic: Set up a small clinic offering affordable health services to the community.
9. Recycling and Waste Management
●Recycling Center: Collect and recycle waste materials like plastics, paper, or metals, selling the processed materials for reuse.
10. Partnerships and Social Enterprises
●Cafe or Bakery: Open a small cafe or bakery where orphans can learn hospitality skills, and the revenue can support the orphanage.
By combining these projects, the orphanage can generate income, reduce dependency on external donations, and teach the children valuable skills for their futures.
