30% of Ugandan women will experience domestic violence. Many are beaten regularly, due to cultural beliefs that it’s socially acceptable to hit a wife to “discipline” her. Ugandan women often lose children and all possessions when they leave their husband.
Her testimony on why she needs shelter at this time:
“I am Annah Mukazimana, aged 38 years originally from Kayanza Province in Burindi. In 2015 I got married to Ssembejja Asuman, an army officer in the Uganda Peoples Defence Forces. My husband died in 2021 of injuries suffered in an accident on duty. After the burial ceremony, I went to stay with my in-laws in Kikondo parish, Kiringente subcounty, Mpigi district. The government of Uganda undertook to compensate the family for the death of my husband which arose in the course of duty. The compensation was paid in early March 2022 through my account. My father in-law instructed me to withdraw all the monies paid and deposit the same to his mobile money account, which I did. Two days after the transaction, my father in-law gave me an equivalent of US$30 as transport to go back to Burundi. When I told him that the money was not enough, the in-laws forced me out of their house. Being a foreigner, I sort help from a nearby Police Post, in the Family and Child protection unit where an officer referred me to ShelterMi Safehouse for accommodation and food as they looked into my case.
Currently, I cannot cater for myself. My daughter and two sons are with my in-laws. It is because of this that I am seeking funding for shelter, food and legal assistance at ShelterMi SafeHouse Uganda.”
$20 to Sarah Sinia (BELOW) from Kasanje, Mawookota North, Mpigi district, Uganda
“I am Sarah Sinia, aged 35 years. I came from a strong Catholic family. I did convert to Islam in order to marry. I was married to Hajji Kiyemba Jamal as a third wife, to whom I produced four children aged 9,8,6 and 5 years old. As a teacher I had an opportunity to inquire into the basis of my faith. After attending a critical thinking workshop organized by Daniel Beaton of Humanist Global Charity, I that Islam just like Christianity was a creature of man, and stopped going to mosque.
My husband was told that I had stopped going for prayers at the local mosque. He came home accompanied by the Sheik to find out why. I informed them of my wish to become a non-religious person. This led to a heated argument and physical confrontation by my husband. They accused me of being a woman of loose morals and vowed to the matter with my family. The next day, my husband came back accompanied by the Sheik, first wife and my elder brother and pronounced ‘talaq’ three times. From that moment, he divorced me and asked me to accompany my brother back to my parents’ home. My husband handed over my children to his first wife. I left home and went to stay with a fellow teacher at Kavule Trading Centre.
After a week, my husband came to the school where I teach with my mother, my younger brother, police woman officer and the Sheik. They informed the Headmistress that had come to take me to Butabika National Referral Mental Hospital because I was mentally disturbed. The Headmistress advised me to leave the school premises and seek help ShelterMi Safehouse. After explaining to the manager at the Safehouse, I was admitted.
My husband has paid the local law enforcement officers to arrest me and take me to the hospital. I cannot go to work. At the moment, I am unable to cater for myself. It is because of this that I am seeking funding for shelter, food and legal support at ShelterMi SafeHouse Uganda.”
$20 to Sherani Joselyne (Below) from Kajjansi, Makindye-Ssebabagaboo, Wakiso district, Uganda
“I am Sherani Joselyne, aged 26 years. In December 2016, I got married to Isaack Bukenya in Mubende district. I have two children aged 06 and 03 years old. Isaack left our matrimonial home in 2019 in search of employment in Tanzania. Since then, he did not communicate with me or his family. I joined a women’s group to sale food items in the markets around Mubende district in order to cater for the children and my upkeep. All was well until Isaack came back in February 2022. He told me that he was working in Kampala but had lost his job. We were happy to have him back home and hoped things would change for the better.
In late February, Isaack came back home late and picked an argument over food. The argument led to physical confrontation. He beat me the whole night. The next morning he forced me out of the house with the children. I borrowed money from a workmate and left for my ancestral home, where I left the children with my parents. I went to look for a job in Mpigi district at a Chinese package company while staying with my aunty. I was sexual harassed by my uncle. When I informed my aunty, she accused me of seducing her husband and chased me from her house. While staying at the local church at Kavule, an elderly lady referred me to ShelterMi Safehouse. Upon arrival at the ShelterMi Safehouse, I was warmly received and for the first time felt loved.
