A Himalayan Vision for Egalitarianism
By Dikshika Gurung
Many a times, I have sat myself down to think about the concept of egalitarianism. From where I'm standing in this tiny, northeastern state of India, I have so often seen the raw disparities that exist not only in my country but all over the world. I think that a society free from all kinds of discrimination and with equal rights, opportunities, and dignity for every individual is not only possible but it is necessary for our future in common.
The necessity for egalitarianism has never been more urgent. As a student from Sikkim, the very heart of the Himalayas, where I witnessed these differences not just here locally but across the planet, I agree with the observation. This is a global problem that asks for a system that will provide the same conditions, resources, and opportunities to all. From the small villages in my birth place to the big cities in the west, each person should get a fair and equal chance. Creating a more just and inclusive world will allow us to tap into the whole potential of humanity by employing various perspectives and talents that haven't been used so far. Not only egalitarianism is a utopian ideal, but it is necessary to maintain a harmonious and prosperous future for all the residents of earth.
I have seen first hand the poverty that pervades not only within our diverse society but all over the globe. The significance of egalitarianism is so immense that it is the key to solving a number of globally critical problems. Through concentrating on cutting poverty and getting a more balanced living standard all over the world, we can bring about a fairer and more just society on a global basis. This not only helps the under privileged people but also it leads to enhanced mutual understanding and cooperation, thereby demolishing walls that have separated countries, and peoples for a very long time. On top of that, the issue of egalitarianism is the most important one to achieve the UN goals of sustainable development, a universal plan for a better and greener future for every one of us.
The concept of egalitarianism can only be achieved through collective action, reforms and our personal commitment towards this goal. We can empower the marginalized and the underprivileged people living in every part of the world, bridge the huge gap between the rich and the poor, promote unity and harmony within every community when we are pushing for a egalitarian world.
As we work towards the goal of Global Egalitarianism, there are certainly many countless challenges and complications that will arise but we must continue to push towards it because a world where every individual has equal and fair opportunities and dignity is worth fighting for.
