Sanitary Pads & Menstrual Education to Rural Women in Nala Bhaktapur

EXECUTIVE SUMMARY:

In Nepal menstruation means impurity, and during their menstrual period, women are not allowed to stay in the family. In the rural areas of the western part of Nepal, women are banished to sheds during their menstrual period, a tradition known as chhaupadi.

Rooted in Hinduism, menstrual restrictions regarding attending school and accessing health care, food and drink are a purity practice are viewed as “God’s rules to be obeyed” to prevent misfortunes.

This practice increases women’s vulnerability to illness due to exposure to cold, and heath problems due to sleeping and living in unhygienic conditions .

Farming women also get uterine infections because they use rags during their periods.

This program will distribute sanitary pads to farmer women of Nala Bhaktapur.  

Backgrounds:

 A 2016 reports on menstrual health and hygiene management in Nepal found that 83% of menstruating girls still use cloth while only 15% use sanitary pads.

My intervention program will distribute sanitary pads and provide menstrual health hygiene management education.

I will:

· Research area

· Identify girls from farming areas and street vendors who are in poverty 

· Buy sanitary pads and distribute sanitary pads. 

· Provide information about health problems related to unhygienic menstrual practice.

· Provide educations about menstrual health hygiene management. 

Expected outcomes 

· Increase awareness about menstrual health hygiene.

· Increase awareness about health problems related to unhygienic menstrual practices.

· Minimization of the medical illnesses related to reproductive tract infections in women and girls.

· Training and habit formation to use sanitary napkins and maintain hygiene during periods.

· Ensure that the girl child does not miss school which results in reduction in absenteeism.
